Installing the Router

Perhaps this is the simplest step of the entire tutorial: you need to connect a network cable to your modem and the other end to the WAN port on your router. If you do this, connect other computers via cable if you ever have one.

This installation is necessary because, this way, the connection leaves your modem and passes to the router which, in turn, distributes it to the different machines that will be in a network.

  • With the router connected, it’s time to get into the settings of your device. To access the page, enter the following address in any browser:
  • Under “User Name”, use the name “Admin”; in “Password”, you can leave the field blank.
  • Click “OK” and enter the D-Link router setup screen.

Protecting your settings

To increase the security of your settings, it is interesting that you take some steps like changing the general router password and selecting the way your network is connected.

3.1) Changing the password

Click “Maintenance” and click the “Admin Setup” button. Once this is done, create a new password in the field under “Administrator”. Confirm and click “Apply”. Okay, the general password has been changed.

3.2) Choosing the type of active connection

To prevent computers outside your network from trying to connect, you can choose to disconnect the wireless connection from your router, so that only the computers connected by cable can connect.
To do this, it is very simple. You only have to choose the “Wireless Setup” option in the main screen of the router and uncheck the “Enable Wireless” box.

Setting the password for wireless connection

If you want your network to have an active wireless connection for all users, it is important that you enter a password to keep everyone safe and prevent others from using the network.

To do this, inside the router home page, find the “Wireless” button. Within the option, click on “Wireless Settings”. In the area labeled “Wireless Security Mode”, choose the “Enable WEP Wireless Security” option.
Under “WEP Encryption“, select “128Bit”. Then, in the “WEP Key” field, you must include a new password for your wireless network.

When done, click the “Save Settings” button at the top of the screen.

Change your SSID

If you prefer to change the name of your network, making it easier to find the computers that share your connection, click on “Wireless Settings”. Within that area, go to “Wireless Network Settings” and in the “Wireless Network Name” field, include the name you want to give to your network.

Once done, save the title by clicking “Save Settings” at the top of the screen.

To disable the SSID transmission, select the “Enable Hidden Wireless” option. This will hide the network name, leaving it hidden for people who might want to share your connection.

Filtering MAC Addresses

To filter the MAC addresses, click on the “Advanced” tab in the configuration screen of your D-Link and select the “Network Filter” option.

In this area, select the “Turn MAC Filtering ON and ALLOW” option. Basically, you are allowing the listed computers to connect to your network.

Enter the name and MAC address of the computers you want to keep on your network, starting with the machine you are using to configure the router. To finish, click “Save settings” at the top of the screen.
